Position Summary
This position is held in conjunction with an Open-Rank Faculty role in the Department of Health Sciences Education, College of Medicine at Rockford. The role encompasses both administrative and faculty responsibilities. As the Associate Director of Curriculum Development at the National Center for Rural Health Professions (NCRHP), you will lead and develop interdisciplinary, rural health curriculum and supplemental course offerings. In your faculty role, you will contribute to teaching selected portions of courses for M1, M2, and M3 rural medical students. You will also conduct seminars, retreats, and community-related activities and collaborate with health science faculty to teach and implement rural health curriculum, programs, statistical analyses, and grant activities in areas of content expertise. Additionally, you will participate in designing and implementing assessment strategies to measure the impact of interdisciplinary and rural pharmacy programs on student progress. Participation in medical education research and scholarly activities, including assuming primary responsibility for grant writing for rural health professions research, is expected.
Duties & Responsibilities
• Collaborate with the Department of Health Sciences Education to plan and offer special courses, electives, and seminars that will enhance the training of medical students on topics related to underserved healthcare delivery.
• Lead, refine, develop, and implement rural curriculum development activities for Rural Health Professions (RHP) in implementing the curriculum for RHP 1 through RHP 3 students. Coordinate interdisciplinary curriculum and serve as liaison to external health sciences colleges in relation to rural program issues.
• Participate in faculty development, including mentoring preceptors, to consistently meet college academic standards. Continually nurture the relationship with rural preceptors to enhance their effectiveness in teaching and mentoring RHP students.
• Counsel and advise students concerning a wide range of issues, such as selection of Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) topics, selection of electives, and other matters pertinent to the personal growth and development of rural health professions students.
• Serve as faculty advisor, as appropriate, for all RHP student study projects, such as COPC.
• Actively participate in education, health policy, and health services research activities relative to rural health professions/systems; encourage and support research activity among faculty and RHP students.
• Pursue the full range of scholarly activity as it relates to health professions education in a rural setting, taking a primary role in both publication-writing and conference presentations, as well as in
grant-writing and submission of proposals to secure external funding for rural health professions
education and research.
• Serve on faculty committees, especially the RHP Screeners subcommittee, and participate in related professional organizations.
• Oversee the planning of faculty and guest speaker presentations for RHP courses, preparation of print materials, teaching aids, conference presentation displays, and serve as technical writer for rural health program.
• Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctorate degree in health science-related field.
- Five years of experience (such as teaching/research/curriculum development) in higher education, preferably in a health-related field.
- Demonstrated ability to design curriculum and develop and implement complex educational programs.
- Record of publications in medical and health professions education.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are crucial for developing collaborative partnerships with health professionals, faculty, and preceptors, as well as for effective mentoring and advising of students.
- Proficient in written and verbal communication, necessary for presenting at conferences, writing grant proposals, and handling communication tasks to improve program offerings and support research initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
– Graduate-level teaching experience.
– Evidence of understanding and/or experience in rural communities, public health concepts, population health evaluation methodology, and community-based healthcare.
– Knowledge of research protocols and advanced statistics.
